Bill Could Help Cubans in Legal Limbo
Rep. Maria Salazar
A bipartisan bill introduced by a Cuban-American Trump ally could prevent some Cuban immigrants from being deported.
The Dignity Act, co-sponsored by Rep. María Elvira Salazar (R-FL), includes a provision that would grant parole status to Cubans who arrived in the U.S. before Jan 31, 2023 with an I-220A form.
Cubans admitted with I-220A forms have been unable to apply for the Cuban Adjustment Act, a law that allows Cubans to become permanent residents a year and a day after their legal arrival in the U.S.
Salazar is facing growing signs of discontent in her district for her support of Trump’s anti-immigration policies.
On Monday, protesters gathered outside the offices of Salazar and fellow Cuban-American Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-FL), whom they denounced as “traitors.”
Salazar and Gimenez have championed the “maximum pressure” policies aimed at Cuba that have devastated the island’s economy in recent years, fueling unprecedented migration to the United States.
