Trump Deports People to Eswatini

The U.S. continues to deport people to third countries. This time, five men convicted of serious crimes, including one Cuban, were sent to Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) in southeastern Africa, DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin announced last week.

An Eswatini official confirmed the men were being held in solitary confinement. The official also said the governments of Eswatini and the U.S. “will collaborate with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to facilitate the transit of these inmates to their countries of origin.”

The statement seems contradictory, since according to McLaughlin, the reason they are being deported to Eswatini is because their countries of origin (Cuba, Laos, Vietnam, Jamaica and Yemen) refused to take them back.

Since assuming office, Trump has deported immigrants to third countries including El Salvador, Costa Rica and Panama.

Earlier this month, eight men – including two Cubans – were deported to South Sudan, following a weeks-long legal battle that ended when the Supreme Court eventually green-lit their deportation.
