Thousands of Cubans marched in Havana in support of the Palestinian people and to denounce Israel’s genocide in Gaza. Hundreds of Palestinians study medicine in Cuba on full-ride scholarships.

“Yankee, criminal! How many more lives do you want?,” young people participating in the march shout.

“We will not forget the conflict and the cause of the Palestinian people, which is so close to the hearts of the Cuban people,” says Yasser Rodríguez, a private sector worker.

“Thousands of Cubans are here today. Young people, women, children, the elderly, we all raise our voices for Palestine,” says Yazan Zahran, a Palestinian medical student.

“Sovereign Palestine!,” young people participating in the march shout.

“We have lived through many wars in Gaza. But this time, it isn’t a war. It’s a genocide

that’s televised for the world to see,” says Samar Alghoul, a Palestinian medical student.

“Thousands of Palestinians have studied medicine in Cuba. This is how we support them,” says Yasser Rodríguez.

“The Palestinian students are our brothers. They’re our friends with whom we study every day. They tell us their stories and we understand them profoundly. Cuban youth are aware that we can’t remain indifferent to genocide,” says Jose Almeida, student leader at the University of Havana.

“The Palestine issue isn’t just important for the Palestinians or for the Middle East. It’s not a local conflict. It’s an issue for everyone. It’s a matter of the powerful against the powerless,” says Sofia Albizu, a Mathematics professor at the University of Havana.

“It’s been difficult. I’ve felt a lot of concern for my family, for other families, for all of our people. But we remain strong, putting everything we have into this struggle against our enemy, in our fight against Zionism, fascism and imperialism,” add Yazan Zahran.

“Biden sponsors! Israel kills!”

“We are very far from Palestine. But if this is happening to Palestine, and international laws

are made into a joke, and the U.S., which finances Israel, vetoes ceasefires at the UN

Security Council like they have done before, why wouldn’t Cuba be invaded and destroyed like Palestine one day?,” says Jose Almeida.

“Cuba has always stood in solidarity with just causes worldwide. This is how we pay homage to just causes,” says Yasser Rodríguez.

“The Palestinian revolution won’t only achieve what’s possible, but the impossible too,” concludes Yazan.

“Alert! Alert! Alert! The Palestinian cause moves through Latin America,” a woman shouts loudly. She holds up a sign with a picture of a Palestinian girl.
