Deivy Hernández is a 12-year-old star pitcher with Cuba’s team in the Little League World Series 2024. For Deivy and many teammates, this trip is not just about baseball. It’s about reuniting with parents and siblings they haven’t seen in years.

  • “I still can’t imagine that I’m going abroad. That would be a dream for me,” said Deivy Hernández.

“I used to see other players pass by my house on their way to train, and I thought I was going to have to give up baseball,” Hernández said.

“I felt very sad. I felt like the world was collapsing on top of me,” he added.

“When my father arrived in the United States, we went almost three months without speaking,” Hernández said.

“When I finally started talking to him again, I began to cry and the words wouldn’t come out,” he added.

“Then we sat down as a family and talked. The neighbors supported him and spoke with him,” Hernández said.

“Eventually he said, ‘Well, I have no other choice. I have to keep moving forward,’” he added.

“I have my father, my two nephews and my aunt,” Hernández said.

“My father and my uncles left when I was four or five years old,” he added.

“Tomorrow will make seven years since I’ve seen my father,” Hernández said.

“Being without my father has been difficult,” he added.

“My father and my uncle are going to see me play baseball.”

“That gives me a lot of emotion because I’m going to be able to see my father again after such a long time,” Hernández said.

“I had to keep training because I wanted to succeed,” he added.

“I’m dying to see him,” Hernández said.

    “I count the days.”
