BREAKING NEWS: Cuba Confirms Dialogue With U.S.

March 13, 2026

Cuba’s President Miguel Díaz-Canel has confirmed that talks are taking place between Cuban and U.S. officials.

According to Díaz-Canel, the exchanges have been led by Raúl Castro and involve international actors as well.

The Cuban president described the talks as respectful and delicate. He also stressed that any process must move forward on the basis of equality, sovereignty and self-determination.

Díaz-Canel stressed that this isn’t the first time Cuba and United States have engaged in talks of this kind, citing negotiations more than a decade ago between Barack Obama and Raúl Castro that led to a historic opening between the two countries.

“Cuban officials recently held conversations with representatives of the U.S. government to seek,

through dialogue, the possible solution to the bilateral differences between the two countries.

This is not the first time Cuba has engaged in talks of this kind. I believe the most recent example was when [Raúl Castro] led talks with President Obama. And we all know the

results of those talks,” says Cuba’s President Miguel Díaz-Canel.

“This involves finding areas of cooperation through which we can jointly address threats, ensure the security and peace of both countries, as well as the security and peace of our region. As I’ve explained before, it has never been, nor will it be, the practice of the Revolution to respond to speculation,” adds Díaz-Canel.

“This is a very sensitive process that is approached with great discretion because it’s an issue that

affects bilateral relations. Therefore, we also need to build spaces of understanding that allow us to move the process forward and step away from confrontation,” says Díaz-Canel.

In these exchanges, we have expressed our willingness to continue the process based on the principles of equality and respect for the political systems of both countries, as well as for their sovereignty and self-determination.
